SmartSolve has officially launched PureNil 0, a breakthrough flexible packaging substrate that the company says is the world’s first plastic‑free, 100% bio‑based, water‑dispersing material, marking a major milestone in the shift away from single‑use plastics.
The commercial rollout follows successful validation and production readiness, with the material now available to manufacturers as of January 2026.
PureNil 0 was first unveiled publicly in October 2025 and has since undergone extensive testing to ensure it meets the performance requirements of consumer‑packaged goods. The substrate is designed to run on standard form‑fill‑seal equipment, allowing brands to adopt plastic‑free packaging without modifying existing production lines — an important factor for large‑scale commercial adoption.
Engineered as a flushable, water‑soluble and fully printable material, PureNil 0 targets dry and powdered product formats across multiple sectors, including household cleaning, feminine care, beauty and personal care, agriculture, home and garden, select healthcare applications, and food and beverage. The material entered ramp production on 8 January 2026, signalling readiness for high‑volume deployment.
SmartSolve describes PureNil 0 as a substrate that “goes beyond recyclability,” offering a zero‑waste alternative to conventional flexible plastics. The material is made entirely from renewable resources and eliminates synthetic polymers and petroleum‑based inputs, aligning with global efforts to reduce plastic dependency.
The structure of PureNil 0 consists of two layers, including an outer layer made from responsibly sourced wood pulp fibres and cellulose. The substrate is designed to be food‑contact safe, fast‑dissolving, and suitable for paper recycling streams or safe flushing — positioning it as a next‑generation solution for brands pursuing advanced sustainability goals.
The launch marks the debut of SmartSolve’s new PureNil Series, a portfolio focused on materials that support full biodegradability and environmental safety. The company says the innovation responds to rising consumer and regulatory pressure for packaging that eliminates plastic waste entirely.
With PureNil 0 now commercially available, SmartSolve expects strong interest from brands seeking to transition away from fossil‑fuel‑based flexible packaging while maintaining performance, printability and production efficiency.
