Five years ago, the vision was to make "plant-based the new normal." Today, as Planteneers celebrates its fifth anniversary, that vision has evolved into a global commercial reality.
The Hamburg-based specialist in plant-based alternatives, part of the owner-managed Stern-Wywiol Gruppe, is marking the milestone by unveiling an ambitious roadmap for the next phase of the global nutrition transition.
Since its spin-off from sister company Hydrosol in 2021, Planteneers has expanded to three continents, grown its workforce to 50 specialists, and developed a portfolio of over 1,200 custom formulations. What began as a pioneering start-up is now a strategic partner for some of the world’s largest meat and dairy manufacturers.
Redefining the new normal
The company’s evolution reflects the sharpening standards of the modern consumer. While the first wave of plant-based products focused on basic availability, Planteneers’ managing director, Dr Matthias Moser, notes that "plant-based alone is often no longer enough."
"Products must fulfill additional criteria," says Dr Moser. "They need high protein content, fibre, and ideally, they should be clean label. But above all, they must taste good. If they don’t provide enjoyment, they don't have a future."
To meet these demands, Planteneers has pioneered several industry "firsts," including:
The future: mycelium, fermentation, and clean labels
Looking ahead, Planteneers is shifting its R&D focus toward "centre-of-the-plate" affordability and nutritional density. The company is betting heavily on mycoprotein (mycelium) and fermentation technologies, which Dr Dorotea Pein, director of technology and innovation, believes will follow the trajectory of organic products – moving from a niche trend to a permanent staple.
"Mycoprotein has the potential to produce affordable protein that can feed the world," says Dr Pein. "We expect prices to drop sharply as production capacity expands, allowing it to become a primary raw material for high-protein, wholesome meals."
The company is also intensifying its work in cellular agriculture and yeast-based proteins, leveraging the "networked collaboration" of the Stern-Wywiol Gruppe. By utilising the enzyme expertise of SternEnzym, the vitamin fortification of SternVitamin, and the flavouring precision of OlbrichtArom, Planteneers provides a vertically integrated solution for manufacturers looking to clean up their ingredient decks.
Global expansion and local presence
As plant-based demand accelerates outside of Europe, Planteneers is scaling its physical footprint. Following the successful launch of its US subsidiary in Aurora, Illinois, two years ago, the company has confirmed it is now preparing a new Technology Center in Singapore. This hub will allow Planteneers to develop localised solutions for the highly dynamic Asian market, where snacking and functional health are primary drivers.
"Five years ago, we were confident we could make a significant contribution to the nutrition transition," concludes Dr Moser. "Today, we are no longer just presenting ideas; we are actively shaping the value chain and winning over the biggest names in the industry."
